PET SHIPPING SERVICES
PET SHIPPING SERVICES: THERE ARE MANY DETAILS INVOLVED IN PET SHIPPING. DEPENDING ON WHERE YOUR ORIGIN AND DESTINATION IS, DETERMINES WHAT IS REQUIRED.
Domestic Pet Shipping requires a specific travel crate that meets IATA regulations as well as determining the proper size for your pet. Your pet must receive a health exam performed by your vet as well as proof of a valid rabies vaccination for all US domestic relocations. Depending on the breed, additional regulations may apply such as a larger kennel size than normally required or adhering to temperature guidelines.
International Pet Shipping is much more involved and depending on the country you are importing to, an import permit may be required as well as various vaccines, blood tests, and quarantines. Contact your Pet Relocation Company to advise you on the specific requirements of the country your family is relocating to.
Military Moves – PCS Orders – these moves can be challenging due to the short notice received to relocate. We can help facilitate the full door to door move required, including boarding which is sometimes required while waiting for all vaccines and requirements to be met prior to shipping your pet.
How do I ship my pet overseas?
A: If it your first time to ship a pet overseas, keep in mind you can never do too much research and it’s never too early to get prepared. Create a timeline as a reference guide. Depending on your destination, the requirements may vary and having a good grasp on what is required and when you need these vaccines can be an excellent tool. Once you have committed to a specific departure date, you will need to reach out to a local Veterinarian that is USDA accredited. It may be helpful to ask your Vet if they have experience in exporting animals internationally. Reach out to the Consulate to determine what the country requirements are. Keep in mind that the import requirements are typically a moving target and can change at any point within your timeline.
Do I need to hire a pet shipper?
A: Shipping a pet on your own is certainly an option. If you elect to do your own research and are confident that the requirements to the country of import have not changed, you will need to advise your Veterinarian as to what is needed and when. You will also need to be aware of the check in requirements prior to departure for your airline of choice. Should your pet be refused at cargo due to inadequate paperwork, weather delays or a cancelled flight, or a kennel that does not meet requirements, it is in your best interest to have a backup plan. Your pet may need to be boarded overnight and re-checked on the next available flight. On the receiving end you may need customs clearance and/or ground transportation arrangements for you pet’s final destination. There are a number of other variables that may pose a challenge throughout your process, and a competent pet shipper will be able to facilitate the entire journey so that you can focus on your family’s needs.
How much does it cost to ship my pet?
A: There are a number of variables that play into the cost of shipping your pet overseas. In addition to freight costs based on dimension and weight, here is a basic checklist of questions that a competent pet relocation company will ask of you in order to formulate a quote:
- Do you have an airline approved kennel? In most cases one can be provided for you or you can simply make your own arrangements to buy one locally. IMPORTANT: make sure that you understand what is required of the airlines in terms of clearance. If your pet isn’t properly fitted it could result in being refused at cargo.
- Do you need ground transport to your local Vet?
- Do you need transportation services to the origin airport?
- Will you need customs clearance?
- Do you need ground transport from the destination airport to the final destination?

What type of crate do I need to ship my pet?
The airlines have strict regulations for the kennel sizes needed to ship your pet. At a minimum, your pet must be able to stand up completely, without touching the top of his head on the kennel. Your pet must also be able to turn around and lie down comfortably. The kennel needs to be made of hard rigid plastic and needs to have a metal door. The top and bottom of the kennel need to be secured using metal screws. Ventilation holes must be present on all four sides for an international via air carrier. Measure your pet: Length (from base of tail to tip of nose), Height (from floor to top of ears), and width. We can advise you on the correct size kennel to use. There are some variations in the kennels such as customs kennels needed for certain breeds or sizes and we can advise on those regulations.
What Items can I ship with my pet ?
A leash and a medium size zip lock bag with food can be taped to the top of the crate. Food and water containers must be the type that attach to the crate. All original documents will travel with the pet. All other items must be shipped separately.
How far in advance do I need to prepare to ship my pet ?
You should start planning as far in advance as possible. Pet shipping requires coordination and planning, and in some cases can take weeks or months to coordinate your trip. For domestic pet shipping, we recommend you start planning at least seven days in advance. For international pet shipping, some countries require certain documentation that can take up to six months.

Should I give my pet a sedative?
No! Sedatives suppress the respiratory system of the pets and often cause disorientation. Additionally, under sedation, an animal’s natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered keeping the pet from bracing itself in the event of turbulence. Several airlines will not accept your pet if they are sedated.
When I ship my pet, where are they during the flight?
Pets travel in a pressurized and temperature controlled area of the plane. The temperature is the same as in the passenger area and your pet can rest comfortably during their flight. When the cargo system is used for pet travel, your pet is put on the plane last and taken off first to assure safety.
Will my pet need to change planes?
Whenever possible, we ship pets on non-stop flights. If a change of plane is unavoidable, we will find the route that minimizes travel time and provides maximum safety and comfort for your pet.
Can I rent my pet’s shipping crate?
We sell crates but we do not rent them since the cost of return shipment generally exceeds the value of the crate. Or you can choose to buy one from your local pet store but please ensure your crate is in line with the airline requirements and regulations.
What if my pet needs to urinate during the flight?
Your pet’s crate will be lined with absorbent material to soak up any in-flight accidents.
