ON THE ROAD
Unless you’re traveling very long distances it’s better to physically move your pet(s) yourself in your car or the vehicle you’re traveling in. This way you can manage their care during the move and they’ll feel better just being with you.
TRAVEL IN STYLE
If your pet is traveling by air, please be aware that airlines often specify particular types of approved containers for pets that are flying. Containers should always be large enough for your pet to stand up, lie down and turn around. For international travel it is required for kennels to be ventilated on all four sides.
PREPARE TO MOVE
On the day of your move, you should put your pet somewhere quiet and secure. A visit to the vet is required to ensure vaccinations have been completed in a timely manner and a health certificate is issued valid usually within ten days of travel – depending on the destination country.
You need to prepare well in advance if you are taking your pet abroad or on a flight. Each foreign country will have specific regulations governing the import of pets into the region and you will undoubtedly need documentation and/or ‘pet passports’ in order for them to clear customs. The paperwork for this can be extensive and you may need to apply well in advance. FLIGHT REGULATIONS
Flight regulations for pets may vary based on the airline and/or the duration of your flight. Certain breeds are restricted from flying and temperatures can also be basis for denying a pet access to fly.
HOME SWEET HOME
Getting to your new home might be a relief for you but it continues the strange moving experience for some pets. Cats and dogs, for example, establish specific territories within their home environments. They will need time to settle in after the move. Make sure that you put out all of their toys, bowls and bedding when introducing them into their new home.
