As summer wanes, cool mountain air ignites a colorful patchwork of autumn hues across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Autumn is a perfect time of year to visit and not too hot to include your best friend! We've created a short list of dog friendly attractions in and around Asheville NC. Whether you choose to hike among fall foliage in search of stunning vistas, take a scenic drive through multi-colored forests, or celebrate the harvest with pumpkin fests, corn mazes, and cups of warm apple cider, you'll soon come to understand why this season lures leaf peepers back to Asheville year after year.
For those of you that haven't had the opportunity to check out this little gem. here's a bit of a summary:
The Asheville area is world renowned as a bustling tourist destination, named one of 15 must-see travel destinations ! And, you might find it interesting to know that the President of the United States chose Asheville as the destination to take his wife on a romantic spring vacation. View art and architecture; Asheville has more art deco architecture than any other city outside of Miami. If shopping is your thing, check out the local crafts at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just outside of downtown. Many of the crafts people offer demonstrations and are happy to talk about their craft. Biltmore Village is another shopping destination that can't be missed. Located right outside the entrance to Biltmore, America's largest home and most visited winery, the Village has tree-lined streets, al-fresco dining and cobblestone paths. There are plenty of historic homes made into bed and breakfasts in Montford, just outside of downtown Asheville. Book a stay, or arrange for a tour of the neighborhood and the magnificent historic homes. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which connects the Great Smoky National Park with the Shenandoah National Park and runs right through Asheville, is a great launching point for hiking and biking, or for those looking for a scenic picnic at an overlook. Mountain adventures await your visit to the Asheville area, whether you're planning a culinary travel experience with a tour of restaurants and microbreweries.
Linville Falls is probably the most photographed waterfall in North Carolina. It is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Milepost 316.4, about 66 miles north of Asheville. You can hike to five viewpoints on two trails that leave the Visitors Center (1.5 miles from the Parkway) that offers restrooms, picnic area and an information center (open May-October and weekends in April). Only one of the trails is strenuous and you can hike to all five viewpoints with a four mile hike.

The Biltmore Estate is pet friendly! Dogs are allowed to explore the extensive grounds and roam through the more than 250 acres of landscaped gardens. Dogs are also welcome to join the humans at several restaurants with outdoor seating in Antler Hill Village. The grounds of Biltmore Estate are perfect for walking your pets, but please make sure to keep them securely leashed at all times. Naturally, pets are not allowed inside Biltmore House or other estate buildings such as the winery, restaurants, and shops.

This 155-acre park has been developed as one of Asheville's top parks. The John B. Lewis Soccer complex (4 soccer fields) is open with lots more special features to come including trails, picnic areas, dise golf, lakes, a retreat center, the historic Thomas Wolfe cabin and much more. The Dog Park features two separate fenced areas, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. Separate Parking for pet owners. There is a gazebo in the large dog area.

Take a short drive to Hendersonville from Asheville with your pup in tow for a wine tasting at Burntshirt Vineyards.
All of Burntshirt's wine is made from local, Blue Ride Appalachian Mountain fruit and the high elevation produces grapes perfect for varietals not typically grown in the United States, like Gruner Veltliner. Your dog is welcome to join you in the tasting room while you taste Merlot, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, a red wine blend called Altitude 3400, and two Chardonnays. After discovering a new favorite, order a glass to enjoy on their verandah overlooking the vineyards. Note that dogs are welcome on Burntshirt's walking trails, gardens, and in the tasting room but not on tours or in the vineyard. The tasting room is open daily and the fee of $7 - $10 includes a sampling of several wines and a souvenir glass.

One of the best ways to Asheville's crisp fall weather with your furry friend is to spend the day walking through the orchard at Granddad's Apples. Whether you choose to pick your own apples from the orchard or select your favorite variety of pre-picked apples, your dog is welcome to join in on the fun. Other pooch-friendly activities include a pumpkin patch, painted farm backdrops for fun photos, and a 5-acre corn maze that offers a challenge for the whole family. Kids will love riding the Cow Train Ride and petting the Barnyard Corral of animals. Be sure to stop by the country store and bakery before you leave to sample and purchase items to take home including local honey, apple ice cream, apple cider, and even apple cider doughnuts.
