Pet Travel Microchip & Vaccination Requirements

Time frame: Recommended at least 30 days before the departure date


All pets arriving in Europe from The United States must have a microchip and proof of primary rabies vaccination. Pets must be microchipped before their rabies vaccination. The microchip used should comply with 15-digit ISO Standard 11784 or 11785. The EU currently accepts AVID 9 and AVID 10 in addition to ISO. Europe recognizes the 3-year rabies vaccine. Rabies vaccination cannot be administered until a minimum age of 12 weeks. The Rabies vaccine must be at least 21 days old at the final health exam and endorsement.


Other recommended vaccines

  • Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus (DHLPP) and Bordetella.
  • Cats: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia (FVRCP).


These should be valid at the time of import and administered no less than two weeks before the export date for maximum effectiveness.

EU Import Services

Time frame: Within 10 days prior to departure (non-commercial) or 2 days prior (commercial)

We will confirm the travel scheme that your pet is traveling under and will provide the guidance, detailed instructions, and templates for the health exam appointment.



  • NON-COMMERCIAL/10 DAY HEALTH CERTIFICATE: Pet arriving The UK within 5 days of pet owners arrive to The UK will travel as a non-commercial movement using a health certificate that is valid for 10 days
  • COMMERCIAL/2 DAY HEALTH CERTIFICATE: Pets arriving The UK more or less than 5 days after pet owner arrives The UK will travel as a commercial movement using a health certificate that is valid for 2 days

When your pet arrives at the animal hotel or cargo facility in the EU, our team can handle the import process, which includes customs clearance, EU border veterinary inspection, and airline terminal fee handling. Alternatively, suppose you prefer to handle this process on your own. In that case, this will require that you are available and present at the cargo facility or animal hotel when your pet arrives, and we will provide limited guidance.
