SUMMER PET SHIPPING – SHIPPING YOUR PETS DURING THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS CAN BE A CHALLENGE

Are you looking to relocate your pet ? There are many things to consider when relocating your pet, such as the import rules and regulations of the country you are relocating your pet to. In addition to that, the breed of your pet and temperatures certainly factor in when shipping during the hot summer months. Most airlines have restrictions on brachicephalic or “snub nose” breeds during the summer months and when temperatures exceed 75 degrees. Extra care is required when these snub nosed  breeds travel because they often have hereditary respiratory problems. These animals are susceptible to increased risk of heat stroke and breathing problems when exposed to stress or extreme heat. Please refer to the lists below detailing these specific breeds.

  • Use a kennel that is one size larger than normally required.
  • Use a kennel with ventilation on four sides. (If the kennel does not have ventilation on four sides, modify the kennel by drilling seven holes in the rear top and seven holes in the rear bottom of the kennel using a 3/4-inch keyhole bit.)

AMERICAN AIRLINES :

Temperature Policy

Using the hourly forecasts from weather.gov, we keep tabs on the temperature in each city along the way, making sure they are within the acceptable range for the animal(s) on board.

85 degrees Fahrenheit:

We are pleased to accept warm-blooded animals and birds for transport if the actual or forecasted temperature in each city along the way is between 45 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. However, 85 degrees Fahrenheit is the maximum limit no matter what.

Pet embargo for some aircraft types.

The heat and vent capability within most of our fleet allow us to accept pets for transport. However the Airbus 319, 320, 321S and 321H have limitations that do not allow pets to be transported on these aircraft.
